This tea is a kuki sencha, a distinctive style of Japanese green tea made primarily from the stems and veins of sencha leaves (kuki meaning “stem” in Japanese). Rather than being a by-product, high-quality kuki sencha is carefully selected for balance and sweetness, offering a refined and expressive cup in its own right.
Compared to standard sencha, which is produced mainly from the leaf blades, kuki sencha has a lighter body, lower caffeine content and a naturally sweeter, softer character. The stems contain higher levels of theanine, giving the tea a gentle umami and a clean, rounded mouthfeel without sharp bitterness.
In the cup, kuki sencha is fresh and uplifting, with notes of spring greens, tender herbs and a subtle creamy sweetness. The finish is crisp and refreshing, making it especially easy-drinking and versatile. Elegant yet approachable, kuki sencha offers a brighter, calmer expression of sencha — perfect for everyday enjoyment while still reflecting the quality and terroir of Yame.

Kuki Sencha (Green Tea) - Nikko
How to Prepare Kuki Sencha
- Add 3–4g of kuki sencha per cup to a kyusu (Japanese teapot).
- Add 60–70ml of hot water per cup at around 70–75°C. A lower temperature will produce a milder and sweeter taste, while higher temperatures will make the tea taste more brisk. If you enjoy a brisker tasting tea, a temperature of 85–90°C is suitable.
- Allow the tea to infuse for around 60 seconds, then pour evenly into cups. Be sure to empty the teapot completely.
- The same leaves can be used for 2–3 infusions. For the second infusion, use slightly hotter water and steep briefly for 10 seconds.
