Hojicha Tea

Hojicha is a roasted green tea that is very popular as an everyday tea for many Japanese families. This amber-coloured tea has a gentle, comforting aroma and is very low in caffeine. Traditionally, hojicha is drunk as a leaf tea, although there are now powdered variants, which are a great alternative to matcha or hot chocolate.

How to Prepare Hojicha

  1. Add 3–4g of hojicha leaves per cup to a kyusu (Japanese teapot).
  2. Add 80ml of freshly boiled water per cup at around 100°C.
  3. Allow the tea to infuse for around 30 seconds, without stirring or disturbing the tea leaves.
  4. Pour evenly into cups, making sure to empty the teapot completely. The same leaves can be used for 2–3 infusions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is hojicha?

Hojicha is a Japanese green tea that is roasted at a high temperature, giving it its distinctive warm, nutty aroma and amber colour. Unlike most Japanese green teas, it is not steamed and brewed fresh in the same way, but roasted after processing.

Is hojicha low in caffeine?

Yes. Hojicha is naturally low in caffeine compared with teas such as sencha, gyokuro and matcha. This makes it a popular choice in Japan later in the day, and a gentle everyday tea for both adults and children.

Can I drink hojicha cold brewed?

Yes. Hojicha can be delicious cold brewed, particularly during warmer months. Add around 7–9g of loose-leaf hojicha to 1 litre of cold filtered water and leave in the refrigerator for at least 6 hours, or overnight. Hojicha powder can also be used to make iced hojicha lattes.
