Fujiya Sakuma (b. 1963)
The award-winning potter Sakuma has been the head of the Mashiko Porcelain Association since 2005. His grandfather, Totaro Sakuma (1900-1976), worked with the world-famous potter Shoji Hamada to develop the Mingei (‘People’s Art’) movement in Mashiko. Sakuma has become famous for his particular Mingei style and elegant colour palette.
This exquisite large cup, handcrafted by Sakuma Fujiya in Mashiko, embodies the spirit of Mingei—the Japanese folk craft movement that finds beauty in everyday use. Lightweight and comfortable in the hand, the cup reflects the artist’s deep connection to nature and his commitment to traditional Mashiko pottery techniques.
Available in both soft, light neutral tones and richer, darker colour palettes, each cup features flowing glaze patterns and subtle variations in texture that highlight its handmade character. No two pieces are exactly alike, making each one quietly unique.
