The award-winning potter Sakuma has been the head of the Mashiko Porcelain Association since 2005. His grandfather, Totaro Sakuma (1900-1976), worked with the world-famous potter Shoji Hamada to develop the Mingei (‘People’s Art’) movement in Mashiko. Sakuma has become famous for his particular Mingei style
and elegant colour palette.

The traditional shioyaki (salt-firing) technique used in their creation involves introducing salt into the kiln at high temperatures, resulting in a natural, semi-matte glaze with beautiful, unique variations. These subtle hues make the set particularly well-suited for serving matcha, as the colour of the tea contrasts strikingly with the glaze. 

This guinomi small cup is ideal for sake, tea and other versatile serving uses. Enjoy the texture of the salt induced grooves and pair it with its own shioyaki pouring pot by the same artist found here. Its darker tone exterior and flat base make it an unusual shape and an experience to hold. 

Mashiko in Japan is renowned for its ceramics, celebrated for combining functional design with rich textures that highlight the natural beauty of clay and glaze. To care for the set, gently clean with a soft cloth, avoid abrasive cleaners, and store in a dry place to preserve the finish.
