The traditional shioyaki (salt-firing) technique used in their creation involves introducing salt into the kiln at high temperatures, resulting in a natural, semi-matte glaze with beautiful, unique variations. These subtle hues make the set particularly well-suited for serving matcha, as the colour of the tea contrasts strikingly with the glaze. The Fujiya Sakuma Katakuchi reflects the principles of mingei, a Japanese folk art movement that celebrates the beauty and functionality of handcrafted objects made for everyday use.
The Katakuchi features a gracefully flared spout, perfect for serving sake, sauces, or dressings. It is primarily used as a cooling pot or to whisk matcha in and serve into a third vessel for lattes or to drink from directly. Subtle variations in texture and glaze highlight the handmade process, ensuring each piece is unique.
Mashiko in Japan is renowned for its ceramics, celebrated for combining functional design with rich textures that highlight the natural beauty of clay and glaze. To care for the set, gently clean with a soft cloth, avoid abrasive cleaners, and store in a dry place to preserve the finish. This set blends tradition with artistry, making it a timeless addition to any tea or sake ritual.
Please note that each katakuchi is handmade and may have slight variations in size. It does not come with the small guinomi cup. To pair it with a bespoke cup of your choice please find them on our website here.
