Midori Noto
Handcrafted Kumidashi Ivory Cup
As each piece is handmade, the shape, size and textures all slightly differ. Therefore we recommend coming to our Notting Hill Store to see and feel the perfect one for you.
Handcrafted by Midori Noto, this kumidashi ivory small cup exemplifies the timeless nature and texture of mashiko ceramics. The subtle imperfections tell the story of its handmade origins, making each piece a unique work of art. Compact and versatile, this cup slightly differs each time so each cup is one of a kind. Hand-thrown and finished with care, this tea cup honours Japan’s rich pottery traditions while offering a thoughtful addition to your home. The ivory colour is a blank canvas to show the delicate grooves, textures tea colour.
Unlike a yunomi, the wider brim of this kumidashi cup is traditionally significant in the Japanese tea ceremony, allowing for a fuller appreciation of matcha colour, aroma, and texture during preparation and sipping. Beyond its ceremonial roots, the open form makes it equally suited for everyday teas or as a striking accent piece that brings quiet beauty and intention to any space.

Midori Noto
Born in 1976, Noto Midori is a celebrated ceramic artist based in Mashiko, a town renowned for its rich pottery heritage. His work reflects natural textures, organic forms, and a quiet, understated beauty. Rooted in tradition yet carrying a timeless modernity, his designs balance functionality with artistic expression.
He trained under the respected potter Narui Tsunao, founder of the Narui kiln in Mashiko, where he developed a deep connection to the region’s ceramic history and philosophy. Working diligently in the mountains, removed from the distractions of modern technology, Noto handcrafts each piece with care and intention. Alongside his wife, a glassmaker, he sustains a life devoted to material, process, and the enduring legacy of Mashiko ceramics.
