Fujiya Sakuma
Mingei Dobin Teaware Set
The Dobin Matsuzake set by Fujiya Sakuma is a refined expression of Japanese craftsmanship, traditionally used for serving sake. Comprising a lidded pot with an elegant top handle, accompanied by a matching cup and saucer, it is designed to elevate the ritual of pouring and sharing. The dobin form, with its graceful arched handle, allows for a steady, controlled pour, while the lid helps retain warmth and aroma, enhancing the character of the sake within.
Though traditionally intended for sake, the set lends itself beautifully to other uses. It may be used for delicate teas, light broths, or even as a distinctive vessel for infused spirits. Its sculptural quality also allows it to sit comfortably as a decorative object, bringing a sense of calm and authenticity to a shelf or table.
The aesthetic draws from the Japanese Mingei tradition, which honours the beauty of honest, handmade objects created for everyday life. The colour palette reflects the natural world: earthy clay browns and deep dark tones. The glaze moves and settles unpredictably during firing, creating gentle variations in shade and texture so that no two pieces are exactly alike.
Mashiko in Japan is renowned for its ceramics, celebrated for combining functional design with rich textures that highlight the natural beauty of clay and glaze. To care for the set, gently clean with a soft cloth, avoid abrasive cleaners, and store in a dry place to preserve the finish. This set blends tradition with artistry, making it a timeless addition to any tea or sake ritual.
Designed to be compact and portable, the cup can be placed on the lid and the saucer can be under the dobin vessel for easy use. Please note that should you use it for tea, the pot does not have an in-built strainer which makes it ideal for those who appreciate consuming the leaf in the all encompassing experience that is drinking tea.
