The workshop lasts for 2.5 hours:

Kintsugi is a traditional Japanese craft that repairs broken ceramics using lacquer (urushi) often with powdered gold or brass, transforming cracks into beautiful, decorative features. Dating back to the 16th century, it celebrates imperfections and is linked to the Japanese idea of Wabi Sabi, which finds beauty in mistakes and faults.

We’re delighted to be hosting two special Kintsugi workshops on Thursday 18th June at our Talbot Road shop, in collaboration with the Kintsugi master Nishikawa Iku.

Born in Kochi, Japan, Nishikawa Iku is a Kintsugi artist and educator. She developed her interest in Kintsugi while working with Kyoto lacquerware craftsmen Shimode Muneaki and Sato Takahiko during workshops at the Ashmolean and Pitt Rivers Museums in Oxford.

Through dedicated practice and training, she has focused on making Kintsugi more accessible outside Japan by not only using gold but other interesting materials as well.

As the founder of Kintsugi Oxford, she delivers workshops internationally across Japan, Italy and the UK. She has collaborated with artists including Lisa Hammond, Bouke de Vries, Kat Wheeler, and Claudia Clare.

18th of June 2026

Session times:
• 2:30 – 5:00 PM
• 6:00 – 8:30 PM

Please bring your own (small) simple broken ceramic object, plate or otherwise to work on.

To work with the time frame, we will just be using Urushi lacquer and Brass finishes for the kintsugi. The brass finish gives an excellent shiny bright glint. Please note that the Urushi finish is food safe and that the brass finish is not.

All other work materials will be provided, along with traditional Japanese sweets as well as some of our Japanese green tea to enjoy, during the workshop.

We look forward very much to you joining us for a mindful and creative experience.

Please note the event is non-refundable and cannot be rescheduled after purchase.
