Join us for an interactive Japanese etsuke (ceramic painting) workshop, where you will paint your own mamezara (small ceramic plates) and take home two beautifully decorated pieces. The mamezara can be used for aesthetic purposes, such as custom jewellery or decorative displays, but please note that they cannot be fired in a kiln during the workshop and are not intended for food use.
Etsuke is a traditional Japanese painting technique applied to ceramics, where intricate designs are painted onto pottery before firing. In this workshop, you will be guided by our guest of honour, Mrs Soejima Michiko, a renowned ceramicist known for her exquisite use of the GOSU blue painting technique.
GOSU blue is a traditional Japanese ceramic style that employs cobalt blue pigment to create detailed, flowing patterns on porcelain. Each brushstroke is immortalised and captured by the strong blue colour. Mrs Soejima will demonstrate this technique, sharing how she achieves the vibrant yet delicate designs seen in her works. She currently works alongside her husband, who shapes the ceramics, and their son, who assists the family business. Together, they form a skilled family team, passing down their expertise across generations. Their small, local family kiln has been producing this style of ceramics for generations, and they continue to uphold the rich traditions of this craft. It is a true honour to have such a special guest deliver her passion and skill in an intimate and exclusive event.
The workshop will begin with a live demonstration by Mrs Soejima, where she will illustrate her methods and techniques. After the demonstration, you will have the opportunity to paint your own mamezara using the materials and equipment provided. A translator will be available to assist with any questions, allowing you to communicate directly with Mrs Soejima.
A soothing cup of Japanese green tea will be served during the experience, creating a relaxing atmosphere as you immerse yourself in the art. This intimate session is limited to four people pers session so book as soon as possible. The small group ensures personalised attention, and the cost is only £28 per person.
Don't miss this rare opportunity to learn from a master of Japanese ceramics and create your own piece of art! Perfectly timed with the Holiday season and would be a great way to find a unique and cultural present for loved ones as more of these Japanese ceramics will be available to purchase at the end.
