You will also learn about the qualities of matcha, and about how to make, serve and drink a cup of matcha in the traditional manner.

Looking for a special gift? Our Tea Ceremony Workshop is also available as a gift ticket. Find out more here.

The workshop lasts approximately 90 minutes and takes place at Keiko Uchida in Notting Hill, London. Each session is limited to a maximum of 7 guests, allowing for a more personal and intimate experience.

The session has two parts:

1. The History and Philosophy of Tea

Keiko introduces the history of green tea and the philosophy and cultural background behind the Japanese Tea Ceremony. She explores how tea connects with many aspects of Japanese culture, including gardening, ceramics, textiles, architecture, calligraphy and food. The Tea Ceremony is a comprehensive art. It means not only drinking a cup of Matcha tea, but is also a spiritual experience.

2. Preparing and Enjoying Matcha

Keiko demonstrates the preparation and serving of matcha, accompanied by traditional Japanese sweets. Each guest then has the opportunity to prepare their own bowl of matcha under Keiko’s guidance, using traditional tea ceremony equipment.

During the session, guests will enjoy Japanese sweets and at least two different kinds of matcha tea.

Tickets are non-refundable and cannot be rescheduled after purchase. Gift tickets are valid for one year from the date of purchase and cannot be extended beyond this period.

The Philosophy of Tea

The Japanese Tea Ceremony has long been associated with the philosophy of Wabi Sabi, an appreciation of imperfection, simplicity and the natural world. In the tea room, all five senses come together through the touch of ceramics and bamboo utensils, the fragrance of tea and incense, the colours and decoration, the sound of the steaming iron pot, and the taste of sweets and matcha.

The ceremony offers a moment of quiet reflection and a deeper connection with nature, mindfulness and traditional Japanese culture.
