Kan Matsuzaki
Ash Glazed Shima Yohen Tea Bowl
Crafted by Kan Matsuzaki, this refined chawan features a smooth, white clear ash glaze that gently reveals the natural textures of the clay beneath. The soft gloss of the glaze catches the light, highlighting the subtle tactile contrasts of the underlying surface while remaining pleasing to the touch. Its asymmetrical form gives the bowl a distinctive, handcrafted character, yet it sits comfortably in the hand, balancing visual charm with practical usability.
The ash-glazed finish, influenced by the Yohen (kiln transformation) technique, arises from the natural interaction of flame, ash, and clay during firing. These delicate variations in tone and texture ensure that each bowl is unique, offering a quiet sense of depth and movement. Ideal for tea or coffee, this chawan combines simplicity, functionality, and the understated beauty of a naturally evolved ceramic surface.

Kan Matsuzaki
Kan Matsuzaki was born in Tokyo in 1977. His work as a Japanese ceramic artist is well known for its intricate glaze combinations and meticulous attention to surface detail.
Kan is the son of the esteemed potter Ken Matsuzaki, a prominent figure in international ceramics, whose pieces are distinguished by their elaborate glaze applications and complex compositions, showcasing contemporary interpretations of classic forms. Kan shares the same kiln with his father when firing their works, capturing inspiration – directly and indirectly – from his work.
Kan Matsuzaki has exhibited his work internationally, including at the Ippodo Gallery in New York, where his pieces have been featured in their curated shows.
