Raizan Yasunaga

Raizan Yasunaga (b. 1970)

Born in 1970, Raizan Yasunaga is a ceramic artist based in Karatsu, one of Japan’s most historically significant pottery regions. Immersed in the rich traditions of Karatsu ware, he honed his craft under the guidance of respected masters Sajiro Tanaka and Dohei Fujinoki, absorbing not only technical discipline but also a deep sensitivity to material and form.

Yasunaga’s work reflects a quiet dialogue between tradition and contemporary expression. Rooted in the philosophy of functional beauty, his ceramics honour the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship while exploring subtle shifts in proportion, surface and balance. His dedication to the field has been recognised through his participation in the Modern Crafts and Tea Utensils Exhibition at the National Crafts Museum in Kanazawa, where his work stood alongside leading practitioners of modern Japanese craft.

Working from his studio in Karatsu, Yasunaga continues to shape pieces that embody restraint, texture and a refined naturalism, each one carrying the mark of thoughtful making.
