Artist: Tomoo Hamada
Born in 1967 in Mashiko, Japan, Tomoo Hamada is a celebrated contemporary ceramic artist who continues the esteemed pottery lineage of the Hamada family. As the grandson of Shoji Hamada, a past National Living Treasure and pioneer of the Mingei (folk craft) movement, Tomoo grew up immersed in the rich traditions of Mashiko pottery. His work bridges the gap between heritage and modernity, creating pieces that honour traditions while embracing the adventure of fresh and original ideas.
This multi-faceted bowl, which sits on a small six-sided foot, is characterised by a scheme of rough rhythmic striations, acts of mark-making that run round the bowl and which connect us to the moment of making and the presence of the potter. These contrast dramatically with the thick lustrous internal space, which is heavily glazed in browns and greens. There are suggestions of nature in both the outer marks and the inner space. A bowl that connects us to the natural world.
With signed wooden box.
