This handcrafted katakuchi pouring vessel by Japanese ceramicist Keiji Tsuruno embodies the rustic elegance of Mashiko pottery. Born in 1967 and based in Tochigi Prefecture’s renowned ceramic hub, Tsuruno has been creating work since 1994, crafting his own clay from locally dug soil. Formed on a traditional kicking wheel and fired in a wood kiln, each piece carries the natural, organic textures and subtle greenish-brown tones of ash glazing—enhanced by kiln-born variations and speckles. The slightly irregular lip and spout reflect Tsuruno’s philosophy that the true master of ceramics is not the potter but the fire itself, celebrating the beauty of unpredictable transformation.
The katakuchi—meaning “side mouth”—is a traditional Japanese spouted bowl for pouring liquids. Used historically in tea ceremonies and for serving sake, its distinctive form and handcrafted glazes make it equally suited to modern life. Beyond its ceremonial roots, it serves beautifully for pouring sauces, soups, or dressings, whisking matcha, or as a decorative vessel for flowers.
Handmade from the finest locally sourced materials, this piece invites you to savour every drop. Its neutral interior glazes create a perfect backdrop for vibrant green matcha or deep red sauces, subtly enhancing their colours.
Presented in its own wooden box, tied with a traditional Japanese ribbon.
