Tenugui Wrapping Workshop at Keiko Uchida

Join us at Keiko Uchida for a seasonal workshop that cerebrates the elegance of Japanese textile tradition and the art of thoughtful gifting. Alongside a complimentary warm cup of roasted hojicha Japanese tea to settle into the colder weather.

In this hands-on session, you’ll learn how to wrap gifts using the tenugui. Once reserved for rituals and ceremonies, the tenugui evolved into an everyday household item, valued for its beauty, practicality, and remarkable versatility.

Under expert guidance, you’ll discover traditional wrapping techniques, mastering how to fold and tie tenugui around various objects—from a bottle of wine to a book. Whether you’re presenting gifts to loved ones or simply storing your own cherished items, this practice invites mindfulness and care into the act of giving.

Session includes:

  • A complimentary tea drink to taste Japanese high-quality green tea
  • A tenugui wrapping cloth of your preferred pattern to take home. You can take it to home!
  • All relevant equipment and expert guidance.

Date: Saturday 13th December - 10.30-11am

Location: 120 Talbot Road, London, W11 1JR

About Tenugui

The tenugui is a traditional Japanese cotton cloth dating back to the Heian era (794–1185 A.D.). Today, it serves not only as a hand towel or head covering but also as an eco-friendly alternative to paper gift wrap, bottle bags, and protective coverings for precious items. Lightweight, soft, and quick-drying, tenugui are both sustainable and stylish—perfect for the conscious gift-giver.

In this workshop, we’ll be using hand-printed tenugui by Marukyu Shoten, a long-established Tokyo textile maker. Each piece features traditional yukata patterns created using the chusen dyeing technique and Ise katagami paper stencils—the latter recognised as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan.

Whether you're preparing presents for Christmas, looking for new ways to live sustainably, or simply wish to explore the refined artistry of Japanese culture, this workshop offers a beautiful and meaningful way to slow down and celebrate the season.
