March 2025
We were honoured to host a special cultural event exploring the beauty and history of Karatsu ceramics and their deep connection to the Japanese tea ceremony. This immersive experience offered guests a rare opportunity to engage with two masters of their craft, blending insight, artistry, and tradition.
Part 1: The Story of Karatsu Ware with Koji Inoue
Our journey began with a talk by acclaimed master ceramicist Koji Inoue, who joined us from Saga Prefecture, Japan — the historic heart of Karatsu ware. With decades of experience and a personal connection to the tradition, Koji shared the story of his craft, offering a glimpse into his creative process and the evolving legacy of Karatsu ceramics.
Known for merging classical techniques with subtle innovation, Koji’s works are celebrated not only for their rustic elegance but also for their function — embodying the spirit of “beauty in use.” He spoke on the historical significance of Karatsu ware, especially its longstanding role in the Japanese tea ceremony and its place in daily life and ritual.
Part 2: Tea Ceremony with Keiko Uchida
Following the talk, Keiko Uchida, our resident tea master, led a traditional Japanese matcha ceremony, inviting guests to enjoy ceremonial-grade organic matcha. The experience was both meditative and interactive, as guests were welcomed to ask questions and learn more about the nuances of tea preparation and its connection to ceramic aesthetics.
Throughout the evening, guests were also able to explore and purchase great works by Koji Inoue as well as our matcha and tea ware collections, offering a chance to bring home a part of this meaningful cultural exchange.
Koji Inoue’s remarkable artworks are now available both online and in person at our store.
We thank everyone who joined us for this unforgettable evening of craftsmanship, conversation, and calm.
