Etsuke Workshop with Soejima Michiko — A Celebration of GOSU Blue Craftsmanship

We were delighted to host a series of intimate Etsuke workshops with the celebrated Japanese ceramic artist Mrs Soejima Michiko, co-founder of the renowned Soekyu Kiln in Saga Prefecture, Japan.

Mrs Soejima and her husband are the creators of the highly regarded GOSU Collection, known for its brilliant use of gosu — a traditional cobalt-based blue pigment introduced to Japan during the early Edo period. Their work explores five nuanced shades of blue, from deep indigo to luminous sky tones, applied with remarkable brush and dripping techniques. The result is a body of work celebrated for its refined craftsmanship and quiet elegance.

During these exclusive workshops, Mrs Soejima demonstrated the traditional Etsuke technique — a method of hand-painting delicate designs onto ceramics before firing. Guests were given the rare opportunity to create their own mamezara (small plate), guided directly by Mrs Soejima and supported by a translator to ensure a rich and personal learning experience.

We were honoured to welcome Mrs Soejima to share her artistry, her process, and her family’s ongoing legacy. The Soekyu Kiln, now run by three generations, continues to preserve and evolve one of Japan’s most beautiful ceramic traditions.

The GOSU Collection is now available to purchase online and in person at our store. We warmly invite you to explore these exquisite works — each piece a true expression of Japanese ceramic heritage.
