As it starts getting dark by mid-afternoon, I’ve realised we are in mid-November already. But though the days are becoming shorter and chillier, we’ve got some great news to share!
We’re really pleased about introducing our latest workshops with the celebrated Japanese potter Soejima-san! She and her husband run the Soekyu kiln in the Saga prefecture in Japan, where they produce their highly-regarded Gosu Collection. ‘Gosu’ is a Japanese term for a traditional cobalt-based blue pigment, brought to Japan in the early Edo period. The Gosu Collection brilliantly uses the pigment in a range of five shades, from dark to bright blue, using highly skilled brush and dripping techniques. It’s a fascinating collection – both for its delicate craft, and for its restrained beauty. What a workshop to go on, to have the chance to see this kind of skill first hand!
We’re going to be running Etsuke (ceramic painting) workshops at two locations - in Clerkenwell and in Ladbroke Grove (details below).
At the workshops, Mrs Soejima will be demonstrating the Etsuke techniques, and sharing how she achieves the vibrant designs that can be seen in these works.
The sessions will begin with live demonstrations by Mrs Soejima, after which you will have the opportunity to paint your own mamezara (small plates) under her guidance, using materials and equipment provided. The groups will be quite small, and some of the time tables will be booked early. So I recommend securing a space sooner than later, which you can do using from following link.
5th December 4:00 – 7:00
6th December 10:00 - 7:00
7th December 2:00 – 7:00
We are also going to be showcasing the Gosu Collection from the Soekyu kiln, plus some other kilns across Japan, in both Clerkenwell and at Ladbroke Grove. Mrs Soejima will be at the venue, so there will be a fantastic chance to see her using her brushes and to talk to her about her work. There’ll also be the chance to purchase pieces from this wonderful collection.
If you are not in London and you cannot make it to the exhibition, it is also possible to purchase pieces from the collection on our website. And if you have any questions, do please feel free to contact to us!
This is such a rare opportunity, and we are looking forward so much to seeing you there!
